The faculty at Legacy are committed to spiritually train students while providing a high level of academic excellence. They also serve to equip co-teachers with the tools necessary to successfully complete assignments from the faculty-provided lesson plans.

Legacy Faculty

Sandy Hughes

Mrs. Hughes attended UC Santa Barbara and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics. She attended CSU Bakersfield and Fresno State where she received her Teaching Credential. She also received her CLAD certificate and is a trained Reading Recovery® teacher. After teaching kindergarten for many years in public education, we are thrilled that Mrs. Hughes is part of our Legacy Team. She is married and has two children. Her favorite verse is “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” Philippians 4:13. Mrs. Hughes says, “I LOVE teaching Kindergarten!”

Joy Hill
1st Grade

Joy Hill is a fun and enthusiastic member of the Legacy staff. She attended CSUB and graduated with a B.A. in Child Development in 1988. Joy then worked for Bakersfield City and Fruitvale school districts. She also homeschooled her daughter. Joy grew up in the Los Angeles area. She married her husband, Kurt, in 1989. They have two children, Caleb and Kari, and they also have two dogs in the family. Joy loves to knit. She makes a point to knit once a week with a couple of her friends. Joy also enjoys reading and growing her own veggies and sweet pea flowers. She loves her dogs more than she loves some people. Joy lives by the fact that without God’s grace, we are nothing.

Timari Duty
2nd Grade

Timari is a dedicated educator who has had a variety of teaching experiences including four years teaching 6th grade in Arvin, five years teaching middle school through CA Virtual Academics before joining our Legacy staff. She graduated from CSU Bakersfield with a degree in Liberal Studies and completion of her teaching credential. Timari lives in Glennville, CA with her husband and two children where she manages the family “farm” of goats, chickens, and horses. She also loves traveling, photography, horseback riding, and gardening. Her favorite verse encourages godly character 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 “Love is patient love is kind, it does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud…”

Kelly Guenther
3rd Grade

Mrs. Guenther graduated from California State University Northridge with a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies. She holds a Master’s in Education and a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential from Pepperdine University. Mrs. Guenther has taught for many years in public and charter schools as well as being a Reading Specialist. She is married and has four sons. Her favorite Bible verse is Isaiah 58:11, “The Lord will guide you always; He will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail.”

Katherine Elliot
4th Grade Homeroom

Mrs. Elliott earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Liberal Studies and a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential from California State University, Bakersfield. She comes from a long line of educators in her family. She has taught second, third and 8th grade prior to coming to Legacy. She is married to Mark (who also helps coach Legacy Football) and has a son. Her favorite Bible verse is John 16:33, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

Sara Bingham
5th Grade Homeroom

Mrs. Bingham earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Liberal Studies with a minor in Religious Studies from California State University, Bakersfield. She has many years of experience working in the field of education from assisting in the Kern High School District Special Education program to working with Kindergarten through 6th grade students in public education. Mrs. Bingham is married to her high school sweetheart and has four children. Her favorite verse is I Peter 2:9, “But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.”

Sylvia Collins
6th Grade / IEW / Novel Writing / Latin

Sylvia grew up on a small farm in Minnesota, attended Winona State University, and later attended Cal State Stanislaus and Cal State Bakersfield to receive her CA Teaching Credential. She has taught in public schools, Kern High School District, the Bakersfield Adult School and the Regional Occupation Center, and homeschooled almost 20 years before teaching students at Legacy. Sylvia is happily married to a fire fighter, has four children, and enjoys a wide range of hobbies including scrapbooking, camping, traveling, reading, and caring for various animals. She is always eager and excited to see what the Lord will teach us through Legacy and is encouraged by Ephesians 2:8 “For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.”

Debbie Hall
7th Grade Language Arts / Bible

Mrs. Hall graduated from Fresno Pacific University with a Liberal arts Degree and a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential.  She has an English Supplemental Credential as well.  After teaching in Delano for three years, she moved on to teach 7th/8th Grade Bible and Literature at Stockdale Christian.  In addition she has taught at Olive Knolls Christian School and homeschooled her own children.  Mrs. Hall has been teaching at Legacy since 2012.  She is married and has 2 children attending Legacy.  Her favorite Bible Verse is Psalm 31:14-15a, “I am trusting you, O Lord, saying you are my God!  My future is in your hands!”

Sarah Moore
8th English Language Arts and English 10

Mrs. Moore earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication with an emphasis in Print Media (writing) from The Master’s University. She is married and has two daughters. Her favorite verse is Hebrews 12:1-2, “Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endure th cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

Brenda Hallum
English 9 and English 11

Brenda Hallum is a passionate teacher who loves getting to know her students and pour into their lives. She earned her B.A. in English at Chico University and received her California State Teaching Credential soon after. Brenda began her teaching experience in 1974 in public school in the PBVUSD. She completed 39 years of teaching in 8th grade English and Literature, as well as Public Speaking and Drama. Brenda and Larry have twin boys, Ryan and Drew. She loves socializing and she makes meeting people her top priority, not only in traveling, but in all aspects of life. Along with her love for travel she loves to run marathons. She even went all the way to New York City to run a half marathon in Central Park! Brenda’s favorite verse is Psalms 86:11-12 “Teach me, Lord, what you want me to do, and I will obey you faithfully; teach me to serve you with complete devotion. I will praise you with all my heart; O lord my God; I will proclaim your greatness forever.”

Estefani Arevalo
American Sign Language

Mrs. Arevalo received her Associate of Arts in American Sign Language and has served as a Supplemental Instructor Leader at Bakersfield College. She grew up in McFarland, CA with her family. Mrs. Arevalo is highly qualified as a deaf instructor with a lifetime of experience. She is deaf and has two deaf brothers and her husband is deaf. Mrs. Arevalo’s favorite verse is Psalms 117, “Praise the Lord, all you nations. Praise Him, all you people of the earth. For His unfailing love for us is so powerful; the Lord’s faithfulness endures forever. Praise the Lord!”

Joe Brown
Film Making / Photography / Bible

Mr. Brown has completed courses in Pastoral Studies from Colorado Christian College and attended the Mennonite Brethren Biblical Seminary. He has completed (and produced) many seminars, conferences, and workshops on youth ministry as well as Biblical parenting. He has received training and/or certification from Youth for Christ, Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, Real World Parenting, Youth Specialties, and Growing Kids God’s Way. He brings 35 years of experience as a youth pastor to his ministry at Legacy. He is married to Mrs. Brown and has two children. His favorite verse is Lev. 13:40-41 “A man who has lost his hair and is bald is clean. If he has lost his hair from the front of his scalp and has bald forehead, he is clean.”

Lorrie Brown
Home Economics

Mrs. Brown studied communication at Colorado Christian and has many years working with special needs children and adults as a Psychiatric Technician. Mrs. Brown worked in a local edible education program for six years and has developed a Bible-based Edible Education Program for Legacy. Mrs. Brown developed and tested recipes for General Electric and has been involved in special events for Cooking Light Magazine. She also home-schooled her son. “The fertile San Joaquin Valley and its abundance of agriculture is a perfect place to lay a life-long foundation of healthy eating habits…Come cook with us!” Her favorite verse is Isaiah 40:31, Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”

Sue Ewing
4th/5th Grade Science

Before joining the Legacy family, Sue’s teaching experience included five years in a private school and fourteen years in the public school setting. She graduated from CSUB with a degree in Child Development and a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential. She and her husband Steve have two daughters who are in college. She has lived in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and have lived in Bakersfield for 34 years. Her favorite verse is Jeremiah 31:3 “I have loved you with an everlasting love. I have drawn you with loving kindness.” Some of her favorite pastimes are reading, singing, worship dance, and visiting with friends and family. Sue loves being at Legacy.

Larry Hallum

Mr. Hallum has been a delightful addition to our Legacy staff. He has a B.A. in History from University of Oklahoma and used his Life Teaching Credential to give back to the community where he attended high school by teaching for over 38 years at Arvin High School. Mr. Hallum served two years in the U.S. Army, Vietnam. His family includes his lovely wife (and fellow teacher), Brenda Hallum and their twin sons, Ryan and Drew. He enjoys sports, volunteer coaching with “We The People”, and traveling, most recently enjoying a trip to Normandy in June 2015. His favorite bible verse is John 3:16 “For God so loved the World that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have eternal life.”

Lisa Harper
Music / Advanced Choir

Lisa is a Bakersfield native who has a rich history in musical education. After earning her Bachelor’s degree from CSU Fresno, she taught Band and Music in a public school, homeschooled her children, and give private flute and voice lessons. She loves sharing her talents as director of King’s Kids music program as well as directing other choirs at various churches. She is Married to Scott and they have two children. Her hobbies include gardening, time with family and friends, playing games, cooking, and walking.  Lisa’s favorite verse is Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me!” She truly feels called and blessed to be teaching at Legacy!

Kurt Hill
Robotics / Personal Finance

Mr. Hill has been an Investment Representative and Financial Consultant for many years. He holds a Series Six License and Insurance License. He attended Bakersfield College and has a passion for helping students understand Biblical principles and their finances. He is married and has a son and daughter. His favorite verse is Jer. 29:11, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future.”

Debbie Kappel
General Science / Physical Science / PE

Mrs. Kappel earned a Bachelor of Science in Biological Studies from University of California, Irvine. She has experience teaching middle school and high school sciences in private and public schools and she has home schooled her son and daughter. She is married to her husband Jay. Mrs. Kappel’s favorite verse is Romans 1:19-20, “For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For His invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the create of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.”

Deborah Marlatt
American Sign Language

Mrs. Marlatt has been an American Sign Language Teacher since 2015. She has attended Bakersfield College and Taft College. Mrs. Marlatt conducts and teaches Bible Study for the deaf community at Laurgelglen Bible Church. She also has been involved in short term missions to Haiti with her deaf team. As a deaf person, Mrs. Marlatt shares her outstanding skills in ASL and her knowledge of deaf culture with her students. Her favorite verses are Psalm 34:18, “The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit” and Exodus 14:14, “The LORD will fight for you, you need only to be still.”

Maija Nack
Foundations II / Pre-Algebra / Bible

Maija is an enthusiastic and diligent teacher who studied at the University of Iowa earning B.S.  degrees in Psychology and  Sports Health. She has homeschooled for twelve years and has experience with tutoring and private school education specializing in educating children with learning challenges. She grew up in the Midwest. Cary and Maija have four children. The best kind of day for her includes spending time with their teenagers and their friends, enjoying coffee, conversation, and chocolate others, and shopping for used second-hand deals! Her favorite verse is Romans 8:28 “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

Beth Prevost
Algebra / Student Services

Through much prayer and the sovereign hand of God in her life, Beth has fallen in love with being an educator and pouring into her students. She graduated from CSUB with a B.S. in Psychology, M.S. in Counseling with an emphasis in Education, and an Education Specialist Teaching Credential. Beth has been teaching nearly her whole life starting with tutoring and subbing for the KHSD. She was a Transitional Counselor for KCSOS and taught math at Highland High School. Beth is married to her husband, Phillip, with whom they have two lovely daughters, Grace and Hope. Beth has always liked being involved in athletics and sports when she can find the time. Her favorite verse and one of the first worship songs she memorized as a child is Romans 8:38-39 “For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Samantha Purdy

Mrs. Purdy holds a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts with a minor in Business and a Secondary Teaching Credential in Fine Arts. She has many years of teaching experience in schools, the Bakersfield Museum of Art and private lessons. She is married and has a son and daughter. Her favorite verse is Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”

Heather Rooke
World History / US History / Art

Mrs. Rooke earned a Bachelor of Science in Art from Kutztown University in Pennsylvania. She taught in private and public school prior to joining the Legacy Team. She is married and has one son and two daughters. Her favorite verse is Jer. 29:11, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future.”

Ruth Scherger
Biology / Physics

Ruth loves being at Legacy! With her B.S. degree from Sierra Heights University, she taught for forty years (twenty in public and twenty in private) and tutored at Sylvan and Edison Community College before teaching science at Legacy. She and her husband, Roger, have two sons, Chris and Benj and have lived in California for ten years. She lies to make quilts and enjoys their family dog, Sidney, and two cats, Fuzzball and Prince. Heather Sproul
5th – 8th Grade History

Mrs. Sproul earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Media Production with a minor in Interpersonal Communications from Oral Roberts University. She was involved with Youth With A Mission and completed YWAM’s Disciplship Training. She has served on the board of Children to Love, International. She has home schooled her children and taught in co-op classes. She is married and has four children. Her favorite verse is Eph. 2:8-9, “By grace we are saved through faith…”

Lisa Sturm
Geometry / Algebra II

Mrs. Sturm holds a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics from the University of Southern California and a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction and Teaching Credential from USC. She has taught public and private schools prior to Legacy. She is married and has three children. Her favorite verse is John 16:33,
“I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
